What should I expect in my first visit to a pain management office?

Visco Spine & Joint Center makes it our priority to listen first, getting a big-picture view of the pain you’re experiencing before diving into the details. During your first appointment, we’ll ask you about your pain, how it affects your life, the severity of your pain, and what you’re hoping to achieve with a treatment plan. We’ll give you a full physical exam, and begin discussing the best course of action for your specific needs. You will, of course, have the opportunity to ask us any questions or concerns you may have. You can expect your visit to take about 45 minutes. We like to provide ample time to discuss your needs and do not want anyone to feel rushed.

Will I need surgery or drugs to find relief?

We are proud to report that the vast majority of our patients find relief without resorting to surgery or drugs. Our board-certified physicians are non-surgical orthopedic specialists, so that means that we do our best to make sure our patients find relief without surgery. We also practice a conservative approach to opioid prescriptions. Our interventional pain management specialists prefer to find the source of pain and target it very effectively, as opposed to loading patients up with prescription medications. When patients are given drugs for pain relief, only a small amount of medicine gets to where it needs to go. The rest gets wasted, running through a patient’s entire body. This can have unintended, potentially dangerous side effects, so it is always our preference to use advanced, pain management techniques instead of opioid drugs.

Will the procedures hurt?

Our in-office procedures are typically done on joints (like knees, shoulders, wrists, elbows, etc.) using ultrasound guidance. These procedures are short (~15 minutes) and patients have described them as quick and easy. We have had patients carry on full conversations throughout injections and not even notice when they are finished! Procedures in an outpatient setting (typically done on the spine) are also same-day. Sometimes a local anesthesia is used for the comfort of our patients.

When will I find pain relief and how long will the relief last?

Depending on the type of procedure, pain relief can be almost immediate to a few weeks. Relief varies for everyone and also depends on the procedure. Sometimes patient will experience pain relief for months. With certain procedures like radiofrequency ablation, relief can often be found for years. Our treatment plans almost always combine specialties so that we are taking a comprehensive approach to treatment. Oftentimes patients will be in physical therapy and/or chiropractic care, while also receiving pain management treatment techniques. Our team thinks a well-rounded treatment plan is the quickest way to pain relief.
